A5 Polypropylene Binders

This page contains all the information you need to know about A5 polypropylene binders. It lists capacities, sizes and ring details and should be used in conjunction with the Polyproportunities® Spec-Pack. The Pack shows the colours and thicknesses of polypropylene and includes pockets and the types of decoration available.

Capacity of A5 Binders

The first thing you need to know is how much paper is going into the binder. This can be calculated or measured, then using the guide below the ring type and size can be chosen.

The Polypropylene Binder range for A5 binders uses the 9 most common capacities: 11mm, 13mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 65mm.

A Round Ring or a D-Ring?

A ROUND RING is usually riveted on the spine of the binder and enables the pages to be turned easily and quickly. (Beware the rivets hitting pockets or print on the spine).

A D-RING is mounted on the back cover and presents the pages as a book block yet allows easy turning. (The flush edge is needed if using tabbed indexes).

Number of Rings?

2 RINGS: 2 Rings are the most economic and also the most suitable for use when simple additions to the binder are envisaged (most offices have a two hole punch). Not suitable for heavier use since the pages are more likely to tear out. Ring centres at 65mm.

2 Rings are stocked in the following capacities:

  • 2 Round Rings: 13, 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50mm.
  • 2 D-Rings: 11, 13, 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 65mm.

3 RINGS: 3 Rings are mostly used when the binder is housing pages going to or coming from the USA (nearly all loose-leaf supplies in the USA are based on three rings). 3 Rings also prevent the transfer of pages to and from other binders since most will be two or four hole punched. Ring centres at 70 - 70mm.

3 Rings are stocked in the following capacities:

  • 3 Round Rings: 13, 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50mm.
  • 3 D-Rings: 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 65mm.

4 RINGS: 4 Rings are the commonest form of fitting, keeping all the pages straight. Has the least risk of tearing the pages in heavy use. Ring centres at 45 - 65 - 45mm.

4 Rings are stocked in the following capacities:

  • 4 Round Rings: 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50mm.
  • 4 D-Rings: 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 65mm.
NB: Not all capacities are available in all styles. Refer to chart on the right.

Material Recommendations

The light weight polypropylene is only suitable for small binders. We recommend that it is only used with 11, 13, 16, 20 and 25mm capacity mechanisms.

The medium weight polypropylene is suitable for all capacities up to 30mm. The weight of paper becomes too much for the material in capacities of 35mm and above.

Binders of 35mm capacity and above should ideally be made in heavy weight polypropylene. Heavy weight can also be used for smaller capacities when extra body is required, or when it is required to stand on a shelf.

All our heavy weight polypropylene binders have heat creased spines for easy folding.
