DECORATION

There are many ways to decorate a binder, but for cost effectiveness, speed and efficiency Binderfast® uses the two most common methods, Foil Blocking and Screen Printing.

Foil Blocking
Metallic Foil Blocking
Foil Blocking is most commonly used when a bright metallic gold or silver effect is required (silk screened gold or silver are matt).
When preparing designs for blocking remember:-
Never bleed off metallic print into the weld - the High Frequency (HF) causes it to burn.
You cannot foil block a halftone. A coarse halftone will give a textured effect only.
Try not to mix big solid areas with fine detail - it will need two operations. Big solid print needs time and pressure; fine detail requires light pressure and fast print time.
Colour Foil Blocking
Foil blocking can also be used when printing light colours onto dark PVC, like red or yellow onto black. A good opaque blocking foil does not allow the base material to come through causing a colour change.
There is a good but relatively limited colour range in blocking foils. If you need to match a Pantone colour accurately, silk screening is the only option.

Silk Screen Printing
Silk Screen Printing is the best method of printing large areas, multi colours and halftones.
Screen process inks are generally fairly opaque and can be mixed to match most Pantone colours when printing on white or light coloured materials.
U.V. inks are used for all our silk screen printing. They give a fine gloss effect print and are very good for halftones.
Close Register - Most plastic materials will shrink and stretch when subjected to heat. Drying U.V. inks with ultraviolet light causes the plastic to move. Close register over a large area can therefore be a problem, but small print areas can usually be achieved with great accuracy.
Under Pinning - All coloured vinyl will change the ink colour you specify. To overcome this, we can print an underpin of white first. This process will increase the cost of printing and may cause registration problems.
Varnishing enhances the appearance of matt inks and can also be used as a form of decoration.
Halftones - Because of the process of silk screening printing we cannot achieve the dot count available to litho print, therefore screened halftones are slightly coarser. Ideally we require a dot set at 65 L.P.I. and a frequency (angle) of 52 degrees. For best results between 20% and 70%.
Varnish - U.V. varnish can act as a discreet house image or can be used as a decoration with multiple images repeated. Darker colours of vinyl show varnish particularly well.

ARTWORK FOR SILK SCREENING MUST BE IN ONE OF OUR PREFERRED FORMATS AND MEET OUR CRITERIA OR YOUR ORDER CANNOT BE PROCESSED.

POINTS TO CONSIDER when producing artwork for silk screening
  • All colours to be spot colours not C.M.Y.K. (four colour process)
  • Halftone should be set at 65 lpi. Angle at 52 degrees or 108 degrees and between 20% - 70% for best results
  • 3mm bleed needed if the design is to run off the product
  • 0.5mm trap to be added to help with registration where colours butt up to each other
  • Pantone/corporate colours on coloured material will need an underpin of white print first
  • Avoid rivets, welds and closures by at least 3mm, unless colour is intended to cover these areas
